Art around the Site
Over the years Killhope has worked with many different artists. The results of the artists work can be found all around the site and in the woodland.
Museumaker project
Killhope Lead Mining Museum has been selected to take part in museumaker, a prestigious, national project involving 16 museums across the country.
Museumaker is an ambitious partnership between makers, museums, and visitors, and is supported by the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council, Renaissance in the Regions and Arts Council England.
Outstanding contemporary makers have been chosen to create exceptional new commissions for each partner museum in response to its site and heritage collections. A participatory project, involving the public, is an integral element in each programme.
By exploring the possibilities of creative interchanges between the historical and the contemporary, museumaker offers something special for existing museum visitors, as well as establishing ways to develop new audiences.
The musuemaker project at Killhope Lead Mining Musuem will be working with young people from the surrounding areas to re-invigorate and reinvent the museum for the 21st Century. This ambitious project largely focuses on participation and hopes to encourage more young people to visit the museum.
The first part of the project involves a group of young people taking part in the ‘Radical History tours’ with Creative Facilitator, Steve Manthorp. Steve has worked in the cultural sector for 25 years which has included working full-time as a woodcarver for three years, employed as Curator of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and Media Arts Officer at Arts Council England. These history tours will include visits to cultural and heritage venues which will inspire the group to create a brief for Stage 2 of the project.
Stage 2 of the project will involve the commissioned maker, as chosen by the young people from stage 1, creating the installation which when completed, will be on site at Killhope for all visitors to enjoy.
Work by Rebecca Chesney
Rebecca Chesney worked throughout the 2000 season exploring the relationship between man and landscape and the impact we have had on the natural environment throughout history.
Using natural materials she created a collection of work, now there is very little evidence that anything was created at all.
Go Wild with Tiles
This was a creative workshop where public, artists and school children created tiles using the woods around Killhope for inspiration. Some of the tiles went back to the local schools but many are around our woodland walk for you to enjoy.

Stephen created ‘Lead, Drab, Belle and Pug’ as part of Moths and Moons, a collection of 25 drawings inspired by the Lindisfarne Gospels.
