Getting the Most Out of Your Visit

These tips were created especially for schools but they are an ideal guide to help everyone to get the most out of a visit to Killhope .
Come on a preliminary visit. Admission is free for teachers, tour guides and other tour operators on preliminary planning visits. Come and see what we have to offer and ensure our facilities are suitable for your group. We will tailor our tours to meet your requirements, just speak to any member of staff for more information. You can use our Hazard Identification Sheet to help you write your risk assessment.
Facilities
Toilets: are situated on the outside of the Visitor Centre and include an accessible toilet.
Cafe - Open daily from 1st April to 1st November, 10am to 5pm. (Please ensure that children are accompanied when using the café)
There are several picnic areas around the site, and we have a specially built class sized round picnic table so everyone can sit together! Please encourage your group to clean up after themselves. There are recycling facilities on site. In wet or very cold weather we do have space available inside to picnic.
Shop: Our shop has a range of pocket money items as well as sweets, various gifts, bits and pieces and lots of books.
Group size and number of adult helpers: Adult groups visits are put into groups of approximately 12 people. Groups staying on the surface may be put into larger groups. School groups will be informed on group sizes at the time of booking. Obviously if your group needs a higher ratio of adults supervisors please bring them. For guided visits a member of Killhope staff will be with your group for the whole visit (except lunch time).
Discipline: Parents, carers and adult helpers are responsible for the group’s behaviour at all times on the site. Whilst our Information Assistants lead the visit, they are not responsible for disciplining the group.
Length of visit: We recommend you allow a good three and a half hours for your guided visit (this includes a half hour lunch break).
Suitable clothing: Killhope is an open air site 1500 feet (450m) above sea level, and the weather can be changeable at any time of the year. Please ensure your group has suitable clothing (and waterproof coats, if possible) as you will be outside whatever the weather. There are many uneven surfaces on site so please ensure your group brings suitable footwear. We can supply wellington boots for the mine trip for those visitors without their own.
We encourage a hands-on experience: Killhope is a worksheet free zone!
Have fun!!
