A County Durham museum’s latest visitor event is set to remain hush hush.
Killhope Museum, in Weardale, will be offering silent, candle-lit trips of its lead mine next week as part of County Durham Tourism Partnership’s Peace and Tranquillity Week.
Ian Forbes, manager of the multi-award winning attraction, said: “What could be more peaceful than a period of perfect silence deep underground? We hope our visitors will emerge from the mine calm and refreshed.”
The daily tours, beginning on Monday, 7 September, will start at 2.30pm, with visitors advised to book in advance as places are limited.
Staff at the museum will be donating the proceeds from the final mine trip, on Sunday, 13 September, will go to Teesdale and Weardale Search and Mountain Rescue.
Members of the search and rescue group will be putting on a display of their life-saving skills each day next week.
Collection boxes in aid of the group will also be available throughout the museum all week.
Normal mine tours, led by Killhope’s enthusiastic guides will continue to take place throughout the day. For further details contact the museum on 01388 537 505.
Peace and Tranquillity Week was developed following a survey by the Campaign to Protect Rural England which named Durham as one of the UK’s best places to experience peace and tranquillity.
