A major scheme to improve visitor facilities at an award-winning County Durham museum is nearing completion.
The reopening of the shop, café and reception area at Killhope: the North of England Lead Mining Museum marks the first stage in the unveiling of the attraction’s new look.
The refurbishment, which was delayed due to the severe winter weather earlier in the year, will also include a brand new exhibition area.
Shelagh Connor, Visitor Services Officer, said: “The team has worked very hard during the last few months to provide a service to our visitors, but it is wonderful to be back in our shop, reception and café.”
The shop and reception areas have been redesigned to be more accessible and visitor-friendly, while the café is once again serving up its popular selection of home made soups, sandwiches and puddings.
The woods surrounding the museum have also reopened following work by volunteers from the Prince’s Trust to clear fallen tress and repair paths damaged during the winter.
They have also reinstated the pathway to a red squirrel feeding station which had been totally cut off.
