'The Secret World of Spar Boxes'

Spar Box

Back in the nineteenth century lead miners sometimes came across cavities lined with gorgeous coloured crystals of fluorspar and other minerals in the dark and mud of the mine. These crystals were treasured, taken home, and built into "spar models" and "spar boxes". Killhope has on display two of the most spectacular spar boxes ever made plus many others.

The Pennine Jewels and Magnificent Minerals

Collections of North Pennine minerals - a fantastic array of wonderful colours and shapes.

Kathryn Hodgkinson

We asked Kathryn to find a new way to interpret the Spar Boxes on show at Killhope.

Kathryn was inspired by the visitors reactions to the spar boxes and our exceptional scenery. Now on permanent display along side the Spar Boxes and 'Pennine Jewels' mineral display are Kathryn's wonderful minute, intricate glass pieces.

Go Wild With Tiles

Walk the 'Go Wild With Tiles' exhibition route - spotting the tiles.

A tile made during the big draw

The tiles were created by two wonderful artists some schools and visitors to Killhope, taking theire inspiration from they saw around the woods. Some tiles went back to the schools who took part, others we have kept and located around the woodland to make an enchanting woodland exhibition.
