What do we do?

At Killhope we have a Green Policy that follows the 10 principles of a sustainable environment as stated by Durham County Council.  We follow these principles in everything that we do.  You can also follow these principles at home. What can you do

  1. Efficient use of energy – we use low energy light bulbs where we can and make sure all our electrical equipment is switched off when not in use.
  2. Reduction of transport impacts – we welcome visitors coming here by public transport or cycles and provide a bike stand and a 10% green discount on admission to the museum. We also offer the chance to offset carbon emissions through our carbon conservations scheme.
  3. Reduction of water use – all our water at Killhope comes from a private spring and we ensure that our taps don't drip and that we have no leaky pipes.
  4. Minimisation of waste – we recycle where possible, including: paper; cardboard; plastic and aluminium cans.
  5. Reduction in paper consumption – we all print and photocopy on both sides of the paper.
  6. Sustainable construction and land management – we look after the local wildlife in our woods.
  7. Resource efficient IT – we turn off our computers when not in use and print only when we need to.
  8. Sustainable purchasing policy – we use local suppliers where possible and source recycled products when available.
  9. Raising awareness – all Killhope staff receive a green induction training session plus regular updates at staff meetings.
  10. Measuring Progress – we measure our fuel consumption and set targets to reduce our usage.

We also ask our visitors to read our Green Visitor Charter which has some helpful hints about how you can be a 'greener' tourist.
